Camp Cubing

I am having a very reminiscent day, so a little story about my past experiences with cubing at camp.

I went to Camp Chi, a wonderful camp that I still love today. When I learned the Rubik’s Cube, I was very excited to show off my talents to my peers and possibly teach them too. So, when I settled into my cabin I pulled out the cube and worked my magic. Boy, I never heard so many “wows” before, I was beaming with happiness.

Of course, there were some that were skeptical and insisted that they could mess it up so well, I wouldn’t be able to solve the cube. Luckily for me, those people were not the smartest people out their. *cough cough* stupid *cough cough* :) But, a real cubist knows that a Rubik’s Cube can be solved from any legal position on the cube, and theoretically in only 28 moves. I won a lot of bets that year.

But my friends wanted me to teach them. And I expected them to. Knowing this, I printed out a couple of my study guides so I could teach them. All in all, I probably taught 5-10 people. My sister, similarly, took my study guide too, and as she was in an older group, taught 10-20 people. The people that my sister taught, also taught another 5 people each. Eventually, every girl in my sister’s grade level knew how to do it. All because of me. (I taught my sister.)

As boring as this might seem to you readers, there was a point that came out of teaching so many people. People might feel that now my talent had been exposed to everyone, and I wasn’t original anymore. I don’t see it that way. I see it that my talent has been shared and spread. I want the Rubik’s Cube to make a comeback. Little steps at a time is fine with me. Maybe a grade first, then two, then the camp, then the state and who knows?

Also, a personal revelation came out of this. More of a sad on, however. Ever person I have ever taught never seems interested in getting really good, like me. They just want to learn it and be done. No speedcubing. Hmm, it does sadden me a tad, but, everyone, on the contrary, is very eager to learn. As I hope our are.
